DC's Aquaman and Sony's Robotech films just found directors, and it's the same guy

Two of the buzziest genre films currently in the works have officially found directors, and it turns out it’s going to be the same guy. Something tells me James Wan is going to have a busy next few years.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, James Wan (Furious 7, Insidious) has signed on to direct both DC’s Aquaman film and Sony’s live-action Robotech adaptation. After climbing the ranks with mid-budget horror flicks, Wan became one of the hottest commodities in Hollywood in the wake of Furious 7’s monstrous box-office take. Now we know what will be keeping him busy in the foreseeable future.

Per the report, Aquaman will likely be first on Wan’s to-do list, since it’s further along in the development process. The film is, of course, another cog in Warner Bros. and DC’s ambitious Justice League universe, and will star Jason Momoa in the title role. Little is known about the plot, though we’ll likely find Aquaman as the reluctant ruler of Atlantis torn between the world on the land and his own people.

"The Aquaman film will be a major tentpole picture for us and James’s span of work has proven him able to take on any manner of project, bringing his incredible creative talent and unique voice to the material," said Greg Silverman, the studio's president, creative development and worldwide production.

After that, Robotech. Aside from the fact that Sony is making a Robotech adaptation, based on the beloved 1980s anime that focused on a team of meters and humanity’s attempts to repel an alien invasion (or three), we don’t know much else. Considering Wan has a proven ability to pull off spectacular stunts and solid action, he should be a solid fit here. But, thanks to Aquaman, we’ll probably have to wait a while for this one to hit the fast track.

What do you think of the hire? Is Wan the right man for the job(s)?
