Community's Joel McHale to play unlikely ally for Mulder in new X-Files

The long-awaited revival season of The X-Files just made a very surprising casting addition. Joel McHale is trading in Greendale's shenanigans for much bigger stakes.

McHale, who plays Jeff Winger on the cult hit sitcom Community, has signed on for a recurring role in Chris Carter’s six-episode X-Files revival currently in the works at Fox. We’re still holding out hope Yahoo! will bring Community back for another season, but if not, having McHale dive into the X-Files universe is one heck of a great consolation prize.

The actor will portray new character Tad O'Malley, the anchor of a popular conservative Internet news network who becomes an “unlikely ally” for Mulder (David Duchovny) this season. McHale marks the first fresh casting addition, joining longtime veterans Duchovny, Gillian Anderson and Mitch Pileggi. Plus: Internet news network? Whoa. The X-Files just found 2015!

It’ll be an interesting mix to see the comedic actor on a serious sci-fi series, but considering the character description, it sounds like McHale could be a good fit. What do you think? Is McHale a good choice to join The X-Files?

McHale made the casting official in classic fashion, dropping a sly Galaxy Quest reference as a wink to fans. Well played. Jeff Winger would be proud of this casting move. Well, OK, he'd probably make fun of it, actually. But we're psyched.

The new, event season of The X-Files is slated to premiere Jan. 24, 2016.
