Want to save Hannibal from cancellation? This petition might help

In the wake of the cancellation of Bryan Fuller’s Hannibal, some fans are stepping up to the plate (pun intended) and have launched a petition to try and save the show.

The news that Season 3 of the low-rated, fan-favorite cult series would officially be its last was dropped on Monday, creating a huge outcry from the fan community. NBC announced the crushing news in a press release, saying:

"We have been tremendously proud of Hannibal over its three seasons. Bryan and his team of writers and producers, as well as our incredible actors, have brought a visual palette of storytelling that has been second to none in all of television -- broadcast or cable. We thank Gaumont and everyone involved in the show for their tireless efforts that have made Hannibal an incredible experience for audiences around the world."

If you were gutted by the news, you can now add your name to an online petition over at Change.org. The campaign had an original goal of 50,000 signatures, which has been quickly reached. The new goal now sits at 75,000 signatures. Sure, signing the petition may not actually save the series per se, but it sends the message that fans are interested in getting it back.

There had been hopes that Amazon Prime would pick up the series, since it’s currently streaming the show’s first two seasons, but the streaming service dashed fans’ hopes once again when it announced point-blank it would not pick it up. However, the production company is still shopping the series around. In any case --- and whatever happens -- series creator Bryan Fuller won't be out of a job, since he's heading to perhaps greener pastures with his adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s American Gods for Starz.

As for the rest of Hannibal's third season, don’t worry: NBC will keep on airing the rest of the 13-episode season in its same timeslot (10 p.m. on Thursday nights), but the Season 3 finale will now serve as the series finale. Let's just hope it'll make for a fulfilling ending.

Hannibal was based on characters created by Thomas Harris in his novel Red Dragon. It stars Hugh Dancy, Mads Mikkelsen, Caroline Dhavernas, Hettienne Park, Laurence Fishburne, Scott Thompson, Aaron Abrams and Gillian Anderson.
