Steven Moffat confirms the return of a beloved Doctor Who character and a classic monster

Despite having been killed off by Missy (Michelle Gomez) during the Doctor Who Series 8 finale, "Death in Heaven," fan-fave UNIT scientist Osgood (Ingrid Oliver) — who also happens to be the Doctor’s biggest fan evah — is being brought back for season nine. The awesome news was announced by Who showrunner Steven Moffat, who said:

"Osgood is back, fresh from her recent murder at the end of last series. We recently confirmed that Osgood was definitely dead and not returning – but in a show about time travel, anything can happen. The brilliant Ingrid Oliver is back in action. This time though, can the Doctor trust his number one fan?"

When we last saw Kate Lethbridge-Stewart’s (Jemma Redgrave, who is also returning) faithful assistant, it was during last year’s invasion of Earth by the Cybermen, led by Missy. But when we get to see Osgood again, she’ll come face to face with another classic Doctor Who monster: The shape-shifting, orangey alien Zygons, also confirmed for the new series. If you guys will recall, the last time we saw the Zygons was in the show’s 50th-anniversary special, "The Day of the Doctor," starring Matt Smith and David Tennant. Ingrid Oliver commented on her return to Doctor Who directly from the set, saying:

"As every actor who’s worked on Doctor Who will tell you, there’s always the secret hope you’ll get the call asking you to come back. To actually receive that call is both unexpected and brilliant. The word ‘honour’ gets banded about a lot, but it really is, it’s an honour. Especially because I was so sure Osgood was a gonner after the last series!"

The two-part episode of Doctor Who penned by Peter Harness (Doctor Who, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell) is currently filming in Cardiff, with a fall 2015 air date.

Are you excited to see Osgood back for another timey-wimey Doctor Who adventure alongside Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor? What do you think about the Zygons' return? (Note to self: Zygons are cool.)
