Report: The second Star Wars spinoff film is a Boba Fett movie

From the moment word got out that Disney and Lucasfilm were planning to make spinoff films in addition to a new Star Wars trilogy, rumors swirled that Boba Fett would be the star of one of them, and that's understandable speculation. Despite very little actual screen time in Star Wars films, the Mandalorian bounty hunter remains an unshakeable fan favorite, and many Star Wars faithful have held out hope for years that more of his story would be told on the big screen. Now, it seems, they're getting their wish.

The Wrap reports that the second Star Wars Anthology spinoff movie, the one that just recently lost its director, Josh Trank, will indeed be a Boba Fett film. In fact, it'll be a Boba Fett origin story, one that will presumably rise above the weak catalyst for the character we got in Attack of the Clones. There's no word yet on who might take this flick over now that Trank's gone (the fan campaign to get Fett's creator Joe Johnston back on board will probably pick up now, though), but the mere mention of Fett's name has to have plenty of fans excited.

Then again, some of us are bound to remain unconvinced. I've written before about how skeptical I am with regard to a Boba Fett solo film, mostly because I just don't want to see the character's towering mystique torn down even more. Then again, based on everything we learned during Star Wars Celebration, Kathleen Kennedy and the Lucasfilm Story Group seem to be doing everything right so far. They seem to really get the characters and the world, and they seem to have a good grasp on how to expand this universe even into territories we're already quite familiar with. So, maybe my skepticism will ultimately be misplaced. Whatever the case, if this is true, a Boba Fett movie is coming our way in 2018.

What do you think? Is this the right move for Star Wars going forward?
