This buzzy director may also be in the running to helm Black Panther

There’s another director in the running to sit in the director’s chair for Marvel’s Black Panther solo movie. Yesterday we told you that Selma director Ava DuVernay was being considered to helm either Captain Marvel or Black Panther, although their sources said that it was more likely she was on their Most Wanted List for the latter comic-book film. So far, so interesting. But now it seems that Marvel has a bit of a roving eye, and they’re also looking at another intriguing directing choice for Black Panther.

Scooper extraordinaire Umberto Gonzalez, aka El Mayimbe, tweeted yesterday that there was indeed another director in the mix to helm Chadwick Boseman — who is set to make his first appearance in Captain America: Civil War — in T’Challa’s first solo adventure, saying: "RIDDLE RUMOR: What other DOPE director could be meeting at Marvel for BLACK PANTHER? :)"

Could this mean that Marvel has indeed met or will soon meet with Dope director Rick Famuyiwa? Seems highly possible that the studio would want to keep its options open. Still, consider this a rumor for the time being, sooooo ... grain of salt! Let's keep in mind that Marvel likes to get its hands on lesser-known but critically acclaimed directors to helm its comic-book movies, and the Nigerian-born Famuyiwa would certainly fit the director profile Marvel is looking for. The filmmaker is currently on the rise, and his latest movie, Dope, created a bidding war at the Sundance Film Festival. Will Famuyiwa emerge as THE contender to helm the prince of Wakanda’s solo flick over DuVernay? Who do you think has what it takes to helm Black Panther?

Also starring Andy Serkis as Ulysses Klaue/Klaw (the Marvel villain and T'Challa's mortal enemy made his first appearance in Avengers: Age of Ultron), Black Panther is set to hit theaters on July 6, 2018.
