Director Gareth Edwards appears to be putting together a very impressive cast for the first Star Wars spinoff film.
According to Variety (via Collider), Edwards has cast Diego Luna in the film, joining the already confirmed Felicity Jones and Riz Ahmed as part of a band of rebel fighters. Luna's credits include a wide range of films such as Elysium, Milk, Criminal, Frida and the coming-of-age classic Y Tu Mama Tambien.
Also said to be coming on board, as previously rumored, is Ben Mendolsohn. The Australian character actor is reportedly set to portray the movie's main villain. Mendelsohn has been seen in The Dark Knight Rises, Exodus: Gods and Kings and Animal Kingdom, and is especially adept at playing sinister, sleazy types.
With the exception of Jones, Disney and Lucasfilm have yet to officially announce any of the new cast members. But Variety's sources say that these are the initial recruits for a film that will feature “a large ensemble similar to The Dirty Dozen and Saving Private Ryan.”
As for the story, we know it takes place between Episodes III and IV and involves a rebel mission to steal the plans for the Death Star. Star Wars: Rogue One is due in theaters on Dec. 16, 2016.
What do you think of the cast so far?
