TV THIS WEEK: Wayward Pines premieres, lots of finales, and more!

We're nearing the end of the conventional 2014-2015 TV season, and that means it's time for both lots of season finales and some new summer premieres. This week we get both, including the finales of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.ArrowThe Vampire Diaries and more, and the series premiere of Wayward Pines.

Check out the week in TV below. What's on your watchlist?

Highlights of the Week

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (ABC) Tuesday, 9 p.m. - "S.O.S."

Two-hour season finale! - A little more than a year ago, there were plenty of people wondering whether Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was even worth a second season, and I was one of them. I still don't count myself among the show's biggest fans, but in season two the show's writers and producers definitely stepped up their storytelling, giving us episodes that didn't just take place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe but actively contributed to it. Whatever else may happen, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. now stands permanently as the place where the Inhumans were first introduced into live-action continuity for Marvel Studios, and since the Inhumans are due to get a movie a few years from now, that's a pretty big deal, and you can't take that away from this show. Now, we know that the series will get a third season to add even more to the Marvel mythology. We can only hope season three's offerings will be as significant as season two's. Check out a preview below.

Arrow (CW) Wednesday, 8 p.m. - "My Name is Oliver Queen"

Season finale! - Arrow has come very, very far over the course of three seasons. What began as a very straightforward vigilante series has evolved into a full-on superhero extravaganza that's given us everything from the first live-action appearance of the Suicide Squad to Katana to Ra's al Ghul, and it's only getting more ambitious. The show's live-action legacy for the world of DC Comics just keeps growing, and the 2014-2015 season reflected a flat-out explosion of its TV influence. At the beginning of the season, we got spinoff series The Flash, which became a hit in its own right, and now we're getting a second spinoff in Legends of Tomorrow. All that comes from the wellspring that Arrow has proven itself to be, and we're looking forward to seeing how much bigger things can get in season four. Check out a preview of the finale below.

The Vampire Diaries (CW) Thursday, 8 p.m. - "I'm Thinking of You All the While"

Season finale! - Though it has since been eclipsed by shows like ArrowThe Vampire Diaries was once the crown jewel of The CW, a show that delivered consistently good ratings and a rabid fanbase to the network every week. The jewel might have faded a bit, but The Vampire Diaries is still a formidable presence, putting up consistent numbers and sporting plenty of fans who have happily stuck with the show through its various changes. The series has already been renewed for a seventh season, but it'll be going forward without one of its key cast members. Earlier this year, Nina Dobrev announced that she will not be back for a seventh season as Elena Gilbert, putting a hole in the show that will prove hard to fill no matter what the series' creators happen to dream up. This week marks the end of a Vampire Diaries era, and while we don't yet know if the show will survive this change, we do know it gets a whole season to try. Check out a preview below.

Wayward Pines (FOX) Thursday, 9 p.m. - "Where Paradise Is Home"

Series premiere! - We'll see plenty of late spring and summer shows on broadcast and cable networks in the coming months, but Wayward Pines is easily among the most intriguing, in part because of its setup and in part because it involves M. Night Shyamalan, the once-mighty director who's since become a bit of a joke in various circles thanks to a series of lackluster movies. Shyamalan executive-produced the series and directed its pilot, and everything we've seen so far seems to set the show up as his (and developer Chad Hodge's) own particular version of Twin Peaks. It features a Secret Service agent (Matt Dillon) searching for two colleagues in a very, very strange town where someone is always watching and he can't seem to leave. We don't yet know what secrets the show will hold, and we also don't yet know if we'll like them, but we can't wait to find out. Check out a preview below.

The Messengers (CW) Friday, 9 p.m. - "Eye in the Sky"

Well, we've got bad news if you've become a fan of The CW's latest fantasy series. Last week, the network canceled The Messengers after three episodes, thanks to ratings that just couldn't cut it. The show barely topped 1 million live viewers in its premiere, and it's been sinking ever since, so it got the ax. This makes it the only new prime-time CW show introduced during the 2014-2015 season (the others being The FlashJane The Virgin and iZombie) that did not score a renewal. Overall, The CW is riding high on a series of hits and renewals lately, but The Messengers just couldn't join that party. So we have to say an early goodbye. Check out a preview for this week's episode below.
