Star Wars superfans send an X-Wing (almost) into space to impress J.J. Abrams

There may be easier ways to try and obtain VIP tickets to the Star Wars: The Force Awakens' gala opening, but few are more inventive than this stunt by two enterprising Star Wars fanatics.  Amateur astronomers Matt Kingsnorth and Phil St. Pier of Essex, England, hatched the brilliant plan to send a real X-Wing starfighter model into the stratosphere, attached to weather balloons, and then film it with a GoPro camera.  Their ingenious experiment attained an altitude of 36,190 meters, with the X-Wing model soaring to the blackened edge of space.  A personal note to director J.J. Abrams was tacked on to the end of the video sample, pleading their case to snag a coveted pair of premiere tickets.

Check out their stunning accomplishments below and tell us if you think they deserve the prize.
