Marvel and Telltale team up for 'exquisite' new video games

Telltale Games is an ever-growing giant in the videogame world, producing bestsellers that draw enviable critical acclaim year after year. For the last five years, the publisher's found particular success with dramatic games based on licensed franchises, including Back to the FutureJurassic ParkFables, The Walking Dead and, most recently, Game of Thrones. Now Telltale is headed for another major licensed product launch that could be its biggest one yet.

In San Francisco this week, Marvel Games announced that it's partnering with Telltale to develop new videogames based on the world of Marvel Comics. The first of these games is set to arrive in 2017, but unfortunately that's all Marvel announced. We don't know the names of any of these games, which characters or stories they'll be focused on, what platforms they'll be released on or anything else. Even so, the idea of Telltale stepping in to fill the Marvel game void is exciting.

What Marvel did promise during the announcement is that the games will be well made. Marvel Games creative director Bill Roseman promised they'll be "exquisite," "sexy" and "eye-popping," and while we of course expect the company man to talk up his upcoming products, we also like that there's some ambition here. Though they've had some success, Marvel's been somewhat outpaced in the videogame world by superhero competitors like Warner Bros. Warners has delivered the blockbuster Arkham series in recent years, and while Marvel characters have had some hits in the videogame world, they haven't had anything approaching Arkham. With a powerhouse publisher like Telltale in their corner, though, Marvel could finally hit the blockbuster level in videogames that they've already hit in movies.
