It's official: The Independence Day sequel has found its new star

Congratulations are in order. After searching high and low, Roland Emmerich's finally found an actor to fill WIll Smith's shoes. Instead of casting another superstar, the director's tapped an up-and-comer. Independence Day 2 will keep it in the family as it shifts focus from Smith's character, Steven Hiller, to his adult son.

The coveted role will be filled by Survivor's Remorse star Jessie Usher. The actor currently headlines the scripted basketball series, which is approaching its second season. The Independence Day sequel will be his first blockbuster credit. Most of Usher's resume includes guest spots on TV shows such as Criminal Minds, The Mentalist and Level Up.

In Independence Day, Hiller's girlfriend and soon-to-be wife Jasmine (Vivica A. Fox) had a young son named Dylan (Ross Bagley). Hiller didn't have any biological children that we knew of. Usher could play an older Dylan or another son altogether. Your guess is as good as ours.

Aside from Usher, two more stars have been confirmed for the long-awaited sequel. Hunger Games alum Liam Hemsworth has also joined the cast, although there are no details on his character. He'll be joined by ID4 veteran Jeff Goldblum, who'll reprise his role as David Levinson from the previous film.

Independence Day 2 is scheduled to hit theaters June 20, 2016. Its predecessor debuted June 25, 1996. That's nearly 20 years to the day.

What do you think of the newest cast members?
