12 Monkeys producer says that game-changing twist was planned from the start

After setting up the status quo for much of the first season, 12 Monkeys revealed a massive twist that flips everything on its head. Turns out, that’s been in the works since the jump.

Massive spoilers ahead for the latest episode of 12 Monkeys!

Executive producer Terry Matalas talked to Entertainment Weekly about the Syfy (Corporate owner of Blastr -Ed) series, and the shocking reveal that Ramse (Kirk Acevedo) is the real reason Cole’s (Aaron Stanford) attempts to avert the apocalypse have failed up to this point. Hey, it’s easy to stay a step ahead when you were getting status reports on the “present” a few decades ago.

You had to think the writers had something better in store for Ramse than just Cole’s sidekick when the cast the Fringe alum in the role, and boy, it was a doozy. Giving him a son, and a real reason to fight against Cole, has been one of the best arcs of the series. According to Matalas, the decision to turn Ramse against Cole and make him the mysterious fly in the ointment was planned from the conception of the series:

“It was always planned from the first minute. In fact, if you go back and watch the season, there are lots of little clues we planted along the way. We thought it would be really interesting to make the moral center of the show someone who would turn and do something pretty horrible in the name of someone you love.”

But is Ramse the mythical “Witness” we’ve been hearing about? Not surprisingly, there could still be a whole lot more to the story. Materials teased fans will need to “stay tuned” to see exactly how Ramse’s apparently betrayal plays out.

Yeah, we think it’s time for a rewatch. What’d you think of the shocking turn of events?
