Rumor of the Day: What starts the battle between Batman and Superman in Dawn of Justice

Even before Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice had a title, from the moment it was announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2013, we knew the film would feature some version of a showdown between the Man of Steel and the Caped Crusader. As the production on the film has gone on, we've seen plenty of evidence of the inspiration director Zack Snyder is drawing from Frank Miller's seminal comic The Dark Knight Returns, and footage Snyder showed at Comic-Con 2014 only confirmed it. Snyder's clearly got an epic confrontation planned between DC Comics' two biggest superheroes, but though we've known it's coming for well over a year, what we don't know is why.

Almost immediately after the film was announced, plenty of fans (including yours truly) speculated that perhaps the confrontation would come when Batman got wind of all the destruction Superman's fight with Zod caused in Man of Steel. Batman, naturally a bit paranoid and always in the mood for some detective work, would learn what he could about Superman, and then perhaps make an effort to ... contain him. It's a solid theory, but that's all it was, and if this new report is true, the real motivation for the fight is actually more interesting.

This comes courtesy of Devin Faraci of Badass Digest, who's been following the film very closely. According to what he's learned, here's how it all begins:

"But it is Superman who goes to Gotham and starts the confrontation... at the behest of Lex Luthor. And unlike The Dark Knight Returns, Superman comes out swinging, pulverizing the Batmobile with one punch."

So Lex Luthor sets off this little superheroic bomb, which means he's got his claws in Superman, whether Superman knows/likes it or not. As for what Luthor's plans are, or how Superman actually feels about this as it's happening ... well, if Faraci knows, he's not telling. Still, it's an interesting wrinkle in a still-mysterious plot.
