Why Smallville's John Schneider hated Man of Steel's Jonathan Kent

It takes one Jonathan Kent in order to know another Jonathan Kent -- or, at least, to actively dislike one. Smallville’s John Schneider, who played Superman’s adopted dad on the CW comic-book series, recently had some harsh words about Zack Snyder’s canon-departing interpretation of Jonathan Kent in 2013’s Man of Steel.

Speaking on The Tony Tone Show on Vintage Sound 93.1, Schneider probably referenced a scene where “Pa” Kent (Kevin Costner) told his young son Clark that maybe he shouldn’t have saved a school bus full of kids from drowning because he ran the risk of revealing his super Kryptonian abilities. Here’s what Schneider said:

“I love Kevin, and I love what Kevin does. But I didn’t care for one scene in there, where Jonathan was advising Clark to do something that was self-serving, it was tell a lie, I can’t remember exactly what it was. I think Jonathan Kent is the best dad perhaps ever depicted on television. And I don’t mean my work, I just mean the man I was fortunate enough to play. He was a great father, and I don’t think the one in Man of Steel was a great father. He had some flaws that don’t belong in a comic book. I really had wished that had been me.”

Have a listen to John Schneider’s radio interview (the Man of Steel bit hits at around the 5:00 mark if you want to skip ahead):

What do you think of John Schneider’s comments regarding Jonathan Kent’s dubious parental guidance to a young Clark Kent in Man of Steel?
