Rumor of the Day: Chris Pine wanted for major DC role

Once Chris Pine hangs up his captain's uniform and disembarks from the Enterprise, another huge franchise could be waiting for him.

According to an Instagram post blasted out by Latino Review's Umberto Gonzalez, that franchise is the DC Cinematic Universe and the role is that of Green Lantern. Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Entertainment have a new Green Lantern movie on tap for 2020, and it's already been confirmed that Ryan Reynolds will not be returning to play Hal Jordan again after his 2011 misfire.

Pine clearly has both the acting and action chops, and his portrayal of the young James T. Kirk has met with generally positive reviews (even if the script for Star Trek Into Darkness let the character down considerably). Pine is signed for one more Trek movie, which is coming out in 2016, so unless he and Paramount both are interested in another tour of duty for his version of Kirk, he'll be franchise-free after that.

So far, the only other actor whose name has been linked to the movie is Tyrese Gibson, and that's only because he's been lobbying hard for a shot at playing latter-day Lantern John Stewart. It's not clear at this stage whether the studio is even interested in seeing Stewart on screen -- although a lot of us fans are -- but if Pine is in the mix, it seems like we'd probably be getting Hal again.

The other question is, when, exactly, will he make his debut? Green Lantern will almost certainly show up in the two Justice League movies -- if not beforehand -- so Pine or whoever takes the ring could be suiting up as early as 2017.

The standalone Green Lantern movie, meanwhile, is scheduled to release on June 19, 2020. Do you want to see Chris Pine in the role? Who else would you have in mind?
