James Gunn says Marvel won't be at this year's San Diego Comic-Con

James Gunn has dropped a bit of a bombshell during his recent impromptu Q&A on his official Facebook page when he announced that Marvel would not be at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.

Yep, you read that right. When he was asked if he was going to be at the year’s biggest geek event in the galaxy, Gunn had this to say: “I'm not sure. Marvel isn't going so I'm not sure I will either.”

And by Marvel, we assume he’s actually talking about Marvel Studios, and not the whole of Marvel Entertainment. In case you’re thinking that James Gunn is pulling a J.J. Abrams (aka, is lying out of his wazoo about Marvel Studios not going to SDCC), here’s Gunn’s Twitter reply:

So, why is Marvel skipping the biggest annual comic book convention when they’ve been such an massive presence in recent years? There are a few possibilities. The studio made such a splash hosting its own event (the late October reveal of its Phase 3 slate at the El Capitan theater) that they may feel like the Con isn't worth the hassle. It’s possible that they're planning to lean into D23, the bi-annual expo held by Marvel’s parent company, Disney, which is next scheduled for August 2015. There's also the fact that there isn't really much left to announce in this time frame, with most of the Phase 3 films too far off in the future for casting and things of that nature to have been completed. Of course, if Marvel doesn’t present anything this year at SDCC, that means Warner Bros. will be jumping for joy since they will be on hand, showing the assembled fans new stuff about their upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad flicks.

Even though it's a bit of a downer to see Marvel skip this year's SDCC, it's not the first time it's happened. Back in 2011, Marvel Studios took a break, since the entire Avengers cast showing up on stage the year before had been such a huge event of EPIC proportions, and Marvel didn't know how they could possibly top that.

What do you think about Marvel possibly skipping this year’s San Diego Comic-Con? Is it a mistake on the studio’s part?
