POSSIBLE SPOILERS FOR STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS FOLLOW
After months of speculation, it seems that the mysterious character played by Domhnall Gleeson (Ex Machina) in J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens has been revealed. And it’s a pretty big one because, according to the guys at Making Star Wars, Gleeson may indeed be playing [insert drum rolls, and POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT!] the son of Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill)!
The site claims to have four separate “trusted sources” providing them with information on the upcoming Star Wars movie. Now, the rumor that Gleeson is Skywalker’s son has been floating around for a while, but it looks like we may be getting some sort of confirmation. But it’s not an official one, so take this bit of news with a grain of galactic sand.
They also claim to know that Gleeson is an Imperial commander tasked with sending chrome stormtroopers against Finn, played by Jon Boyega. He reports to the bad guys in the movie, and even helps in the hunt for Finn. But there’s actually a bit more to that because he is, after all, THE SON OF LUKE SKYWALKER (again: not official). According to them, Gleeson’s character is actually playing both sides. His goal? To disarm the galaxy of its super weapons, which both sides — that would-be the Empire and the Rebel Alliance — possess, and which “should not be allowed to exist according to his internal moral compass.” It seems Gleeson’s character will succeed, but he will not be above doing some bad things along the way to achieve his goal, all in the name of the greater good. And this will, of course, bring its own boatload of problems:
“The implications of Gleeson’s actions are supposedly huge in the film. He began this mission before his father went missing. When he succeeds in ending the Intergalactic Cold War by stopping the weapons of galaxy wide destruction he doesn’t anticipate the immediate consequences. The cost? He opens up a new front and the war turns hot as there is nothing to keep the peace with mutually assured destruction no longer on the table. The real war then begins and the fight for the control of planets and territory begins, causing a conflict the storytellers hope will lead to countless Star Wars tales for years to come.”
Making Star Wars also add that some their sources believe that Gleeson’s character will actually go rogue in order to pull this off, while others think that it’s all part of a master plan put together before the movie begins. Whether this is true or not, it’s some pretty cool stuff, with a meaty storyline for Domhnall Gleeson: if this rumor turns out to be true. What do you guys think? Would you want to see Domhnall Gleeson as the son of Luke Skywalker? Will he make his daddy proud?
