They're here! Have a first creepy look at Sam Raimi's Poltergeist reboot

20th Century Fox and MGM have unleashed our very first look at the upcoming remake of Poltergeist via USA Today. The remake stars Sam Rockwell, Jared Harris, Rosemarie DeWitt, Saxon Sharbino and Jane Adams. Eight-year-old actress Kennedi Clements plays Madison, a new take on the Carol Anne (Heather O’Rourke) character from the original, with a screenplay by Pulitzer Prize-winning dramatist David Lindsay-Abaire. The movie is produced by Sam Raimi and directed by Gil Kenan.

The 1982 original was helmed by Tobe Hooper, with a stellar, scary script co-written by Steven Spielberg himself. It featured Craig T. Nelson and JoBeth Williams as the Freelings, who were battling some pretty angry ghosts who abducted their daughter (O'Rourke). One of the key things Kenan and Raimi wanted to do was to mirror aspects from the iconic horror movie, including that creepy clown toy. Kenan said:

“Whenever someone approaches material that’s so beloved, there’s a reflexive reaction to be worried. It’s a responsibility we take very seriously. We’re working to make a Poltergeist film that lives up to the original’s legacy.

“Unlike the traditional horror film, I wanted to put together a cast to give weight and reality to these characters. It’s the way to anchor the family. It’s such an emotional story at the core. Parents fighting to get their child back from the beyond.”

The gist of the story is thus essentially the same. The Bowen family moves into a fixer-upper house with some weird stuff happening, and the movie boasts some impressive television sets that become the perfect conduits into the spirit world. This being 2015, the screens are much bigger, and are found all over the house. Sam Raimi explained the concept:

“The original film commented on how we've let television get out of control, babysitting our kids. It's only gotten worse with the handheld portable devices. Screens are everywhere.”

When bad spiritual stuff happens, the family calls the Ghostbusters a “respected supernatural researcher and clairvoyant” played by Jared Harris. Kenan added about the new movie:

“The thing that keeps them a family is what they have to draw on, to stay sane, and also to win Madison back. The film is super-scary. And it's scary on its own terms. I am excited to finally be able to share that with the world.”
