The Shire and Middle-earth are heading to Spain as a new theme park

Middle-earth is heading to Spain with a new theme park based on the world and beloved characters of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings by fantasy author J.R.R. Tolkien.

Rincon de la Victoria, Spain, will be the home of the eight-hectare Middle-earth theme park called La Comarca (The Shire). Euro Weekly News reported that the project was unveiled by the town's mayor, Francisco Salado, at the international tourism fair (FITUR) that recently took place in Madrid. Here's what Salado said:

“The Shire will become one of the major tourism attractions of our town. The material will have a very low environmental impact, to create an integrated image in nature,” said Salado. “It will be a place in which family leisure, sports and nature will go hand-in-hand in a unique space of great beauty set in a time of fairy tales and the magic of the elves. Without a doubt, Rincon de la Victoria will have a top-rated tourist attraction, which will also add to the variety of attractions of Malaga.”

The Shire will integrate some augmented-reality features and be divided into different zones. In Parque Urbano, visitors will be able to enjoy the park without having to walk large distances to do so. A second area, Zona de Aventura, will boast attractions largely inspired by Tolkien’s stories, where visitors will be able to climb walls and visit hobbit homes. There will also be swings and slides. The Shire will also feature a medium-sized lake in the park’s center.

Are you excited to see Middle-earth -- most specifically the Shire -- being brought to life as a theme park in sunny Spain?
