10 sci-fi and horror standouts from the 2015 Sundance Film Festival

The Witch

The Sundance Film Festival ended its 2015 edition on Sunday (Feb. 2) after 11 days and reportedly more than 118 new films shown. Some of those movies will never be heard from again; some may go on to compete and possibly even win at the Academy Awards next year (2014's Sundance breakout, a terrific movie called Whiplash, is one of this year's Best Picture nominees).

We did not have boots on the very cold ground in Park City, Utah, for this year's fest, but Blastr has been keeping an eye on reports out of the event -- especially the horror, sci-fi and related genre fare that, while not a tremendous part of the festival, still manages to turn some heads and attract both critical and distributor attention. Some of these movies head to Park City with no expectations at all and end up being the talk of the festival; others come in on a wave of hype and depart as damaged goods, not quite living up to what was promised.

As a result, we've compiled the 10 genre movies that kicked up some commotion at Sundance and may end up heading your way sometime this year, either via theatrical or even VOD release. You may end up seeing and loving some of these; you may also despise a few. Either way, Sundance provides a glimpse into the future for movie lovers -- and that future is always interesting.
