Peyton Reed promises Ant-Man and the Wasp will be 'entirely different genre'

Though it wasn’t a box office juggernaut, Ant-Man was a breath of fresh air for Marvel’s film line-up. With the sequel, director Peyton Reed says they’re thinking even further outside the box.

With writing work well underway for the follow-up Ant-Man and the Wasp, Reed chatted with Comic Book Resources about what fans can expect for the sequel. The first film was obviously framed around the concept of a “heist” picture, much like Guardians of the Galaxy was a space opera, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier was a political thriller. But, don’t expect the Ant-Man sequel to just center around another heist.

Reed teased the sequel will be built around an entirely different genre, and noted the film will also be a legit partnership between the titular heroes from the title. This new film is just as much Hope Van Dyne’s story as it will be Scott Lang’s. Check out and excerpt from his comments below:

“I think there's probably going to be some aspects that maybe call back to the tone of this movie, but for Ant-Man and the Wasp, we have an entirely different template. We know what that template is, and we have an entirely different genre template for that movie. But it's going to remain a surprise. But yes, that's already been decided…

I'm excited just for Evangeline [Lily] to actually suit up and become a hero in the movie. I'm also excited about the idea that Ant-Man and the Wasp were a partnership throughout the history of Marvel Comics. It's a different dynamic than we've seen in the rest of the Marvel movies, an actual partnership. You've got Captain America and the Falcon, obviously. But this is a thing that in the comics was a romantic partnership and a heroic partnership, so it's going to be fun to play around with that and discover what the movie version of that is.”

Ant-Man and the Wasp is tentatively set to open in 2018. Are you looking forward to the follow-up?
