Winter Soldier FX reel shows how to build (and destroy) a fleet of helicarriers

The latest Captain America film might’ve evoked the '70s Cold War thriller vibe, but that doesn’t mean it was light on FX insanity. How did they build those epic helicarrier scenes?

Spoilers ahead for Captain America: Winter Soldier!

With the film focused heavily on the eventual downfall of S.H.I.E.L.D., it's no surprise the iconic helicarriers featured heavily in the plot. From the massive base where they were building the fleet, to the climactic battle when it all came crashing down, Winter Soldier was easily loaded with some of the best effects work of the year.

Who was behind some of that scientific wizardry? The FX veterans at Industrial Light & Magic, aka the geeky house that George Lucas built. With the film now safely on DVD and Blu-ray, ILM has released a behind-the-scenes video showing the evolution of those huge crash scenes and opening shots in the base.

It’s jaw-dropping to see how all the layers come together to make the shots look real as ILM peels them off and puts 'em back together.
