Chiwetel Ejiofor reveals if Baron Mordo will be hero or villain on Doctor Strange

Since Mads Mikkelsen’s mysterious sorcerer character will be the main Big Bad of Marvel’s Doctor Strange, we’re left wondering what role Chiwetel Ejiofor’s other sorcerer, Baron Mordo, will get to play. Hero, or villain?

Long story short, in the Marvel Comics, Baron Karl Mordo is a sorcerer who is thaught in the ways of magic by the Ancient One (played by Tilda Swinton in the movie) but ultimately turns into a, what else, not so good guy. When Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) finds out Mordo’s duplicitous plans to kill the Ancient One, a life-long rivalry between the two emerge that's now been going strong for over 50 years.

So, what did the 12 Years a Slave actor have to say about the role the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s version of Baron Mordo will play in Scott Derrickson’s Doctor Strange? Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Ejiofor said:

“In terms of his life with the Ancient One, it’s this long and intense relationship they have that’s just very deep and very connected,” says Ejiofor. “I think they both recognize in Strange this certain quality that they feel is going to be very useful in a situation they’re in — just by the nature of who he is, and the way that he operates, and the way his mind works, and the certain skill set and personality that he has. So, when they all meet, they realize that he’s somebody that can be plugged into this very surreal, interesting, sort of fascinating circumstance that they’re all in, and the dangers that they face. And so it becomes a process of assimilating him into their ways of life.”

This is interesting because it sounds like, without them exactly becoming BFFs, Baron Mordo and Stephen Strange will be allies; at least in the first movie. Does that mean Marvel will take their time about turning Baron Mordo into the Sorcerer Supreme’s biggest foe? It sure looks that way, although things may not be simple as that because when he was asked whether he’ll be a good or a bad guy, the actor replied:

“Oh, he’s a very complex character that, really, I don’t think can be nailed down either way, you know,” the actor demurs. “I guess it’s something to experience, is what I’d say.”

Fair enough. What do you think will be the MCU’s take on Baron Mordo in Doctor Strange? Currently filming, the movie opens on Nov. 4, 2016.
