Kurt Russell confirms Marvel talks for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

In what could potentially be today’s bestest news, Snake Plissken himself, actor Kurt Russell, confirmed he's indeed talking with Marvel and director James Gunn about a Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 role.

When news broke last week that Gunn wanted The Hateful Eight actor for the role of Star-Lord’s (Chris Pratt) dad (who, by the way, Gunn confirmed won’t be J’son of Spartax, Peter Quill’s comic-book father), people got pretty excited at the prospect of seeing Russell butting elbows with Pratt. After all, there’s enough of the lovable rogue in a lot of the characters both actors have played over the years to make it fairly believable they are father and son.

First off, let’s get that confirmation out of the way. Speaking with the Wall Street Journal, Russell said that yes, he was in talks with the Marvel powers-that-be for a role in the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel. But don’t get your hopes up just yet. “It could be a one-line thing for all I know. But yeah, we’re talking about it ... there’s just nothing to talk about at the moment.” Meaning early talks, you guys.

In a separate interview with Wolfpop’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Russell had a bit more to say about getting the call from James Gunn (who's also writing the movie) without spilling the beans on the exact character he'd play if he signed on the dotted line.

“I literally got a phone call two days ago about this," he said. "I’ve never seen Guardians of the Galaxy, so I don’t know anything about it.”

Oh, the horror! But even though he’s not seen it yet, Kurt Russell said he's at least heard good things about the movie:

“Many times I’ve heard ‘That’s a really fun movie, a really good movie [with] great characters.’ I don’t know it! So, I didn’t realize that [James Gunn] had written and directed it, but we talked to each other on the phone. And I just had to be honest and say, ‘Thank you for considering me, I have to read [the script], and I have to watch the [first] movie because I can’t bring anything for you [right now]. I’ve got nothing to offer here. So, I’m amazed to get asked about this because everybody knows more about it than I do... it’s a little weird.”

What do you guys think? Would you love to see Kurt Russell blast off into space as Chris Pratt’s father on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2? The movie is slated to open in theaters on May 5, 2017.
