Deadpool announces IMAX release with a giant chimichanga in hilarious new clip

Considering they basically willed the movie into existence with the power of a mock-up clip and Ryan Reynolds’ boundless charisma, it’s no surprise the Deadpool team are keen to tap into the holiday spirit to promote their new X-Men spinoff.

The Deadpool film will apparently be getting an IMAX release, and Ryan Reynolds has suited up in his trademark gear to make the announcement in the most Deadpool way possible — with a gigantic chimichanga. It also means Deadpool could turn out to be a major proving ground for the viability of the X-Men franchise outside the main releases and Wolverine.

Deadpool, which tells the R-rated origin story of the Merc With A Mouth, is a risky venture for the studio anyway (there’s a reason it languished in development hell for so long), so an IMAX release is a fascinating vote of confidence for a mid-tier character getting what will almost certainly be a hard-R adaptation. Sure, there are certainly a lot of Deadpool fans out there (and we’re as psyched as anyone to see this movie) — but are there enough fans to fill up some IMAX theaters to see this one on the really big screen? Here’s hoping, at least.

Check out the IMAX clip below and let us know what you think:

Deadpool opens nationwide (and IMAX, apparently) on Feb. 12, 2016.
