Star Wars: The Force Awakens shatters box office record with $250 million opening weekend

It seemed like a foregone conclusion that Star Wars: The Force Awakens would break some box-office records, but those crazy-high estimates for the opening weekend actually turned out to be right.

Disney has yet to release the final box-office haul for the weekend, but Deadline is reporting the full weekend earnings to total right at $250 million. That’s a ridiculous amount of money, obviously, and shatters the Jurassic World opening of $208 million (and is well above fellow Disney property The Avengers’ $207 million).

The Force Awakens showed staying power for the entire weekend, breaking just about every daily record on the way to the massive total. The Star Wars sequel took in just over $60 million on Sunday, $57 million on Thursday and $120.5 million on Friday — all record highs. The Saturday haul of $68.7 was about a million below Jurassic World and The Avengers. But still, we’re talking about ridiculous piles of money here.

With opening weekend behind us, and a wave of positive reviews and press coverage riding into Christmas, the real question now is just how much long-term staying power the film might have over the next several weeks. Just guessing, it’ll be a lot. Fans will be wanting to see this thing multiple times, and it’s reached such a critical mass that almost everyone at least wants to check it out once.

At this point, there’s no telling how much money The Force Awakens could make before it’s all said and done.
