The Time Lords return in 25 new pics from the Doctor Who Season 9 finale

Auntie Beeb (the BBC) has unleashed a bunch of new images from the Doctor Who Season 9 finale, “Hell Bent.”

WARNING: Spoilers galore below!

When last we saw the Doctor (Peter Capaldi), our beloved Time Lord had just escaped a hellish prison where he’d been trapped and hunted by a deadly creature called the Veil.

During that time — oh, roughly 2 billion years — the Doctor repeatedly died, only to come back to life over and over again by being duplicated in a teleporter room. He also conceded a number of truths before it was revealed that, in the end, he’d actually been trapped inside his own Confession dial.

Finally breaking free of a 20-foot-thick wall made out of Azbantium — a mineral we're told is 400 times harder than diamond -- with his fists, no less, the Time Lord stepped outside his prison only to find himself on his home planet of Gallifrey. And, boy howdy, was he p****d.

Airing Saturday, “Hell Bent” will conclude the two-parter begun by “Heaven Sent,” written by Steven Moffat and helmed by Rachel Talalay. Here is the official episode synopsis:

If you took everything from him, betrayed him, trapped him, and broke both his hearts... how far might the Doctor go?

Returning to Gallifrey, the Doctor faces the Time Lords in a struggle that will take him to the end of time itself. Who is the Hybrid? And what is the Doctor's confession?

Check out pics from the finale in the gallery below (which includes the American diner featured in the Season 6 episode “The Impossible Astronaut”), and let us know what you think.
