In one of the widest casting calls this side of the galaxy, Disney and Lucafilm have met with more than 2,500 hopefuls for the role of a young Han Solo in the planned Star Wars spinoff/prequel movie, The Hollywood Reporter revealed today.
The actors have either met with the powers-that-be or have put themselves on tape, with casting director Jeanne McCarthy running point on finding the man who'll have to fill the beloved space rogue’s boots. Played by Harrison Ford in the original Star Wars trilogy, the 73-year-old actor will be back as Han Solo in the highly anticipated Star Wars: The Force Awakens, out in movie theaters Dec. 18. The studio is currently looking for a 20-something actor to play Solo in the origin story.
Of course, the list of actors will be drastically cut down before the movie’s directors, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, zero in on the one. With the movie not due to go in front of the cameras until January 2017 (with a May 25, 2018, release date), they’ll have more than enough time to find the perfect fit.
It’s said the casting team is looking for someone who at least looks a bit like a young Harrison Ford (I think that rules out some of the actors who've read for the part so far) who can be both funny and charming, on top of being able to do the action scenes. They're not only looking at American actors, but also Canadian and British ones, and actors between the ages of 18 and 32 have read for the highly sought-after gig.
Here are some of the actors who have tested for the iconic role: Ansel Elgort (Divergent), Dave Franco (21 Jump Street), Miles Teller (Fantastic Four), Nick Robinson (Jurassic World), Chandler Riggs (The Walking Dead; the youngest of the bunch at 16), Hunter Parrish (Weeds), Rami Malek (Mr. Robot), Landon Liboiron (Hemlock Grove), Ed Westwick (Gossip Girl), Tom Felton (Harry Potter), Joshua Sasse (Galavant), Colton Haynes (Arrow), Jack Reynor (Transformers: Age of Extinction), Max Thieriot (Bates Motel), Logan Lerman (Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters), Leo Howard (Conan the Barbarian), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Avengers: Age of Ultron) and Tony Oller (The Purge).
The Han Solo-centric Star Wars spinoff movie is currently being penned by the father-and-son duo of Lawrence and Jon Kasdan. Whoever lands the role will be faced with an almost impossible task, since Harrison Ford’s turn as Han Solo is one of the great genre performances of all time. So yeah, good luck!
