Watch George Takei and Simon Pegg react to the Star Trek Beyond trailer

Ever since the first Star Trek Beyond trailer was beamed online, fan reaction has ranged from the wildly positive to the downright negative, with some applauding the fresh energy of the rebooted movie franchise and others dissing the fast and furious footage, declaring it did not embody the true spirit of Star Trek.

But what did two Star Trek alums think about that first action-packed trailer?

George Takei, who played the original Lt. Hikaru Sulu on Star Trek: TOS, and Simon Pegg, who portrays the Enterprise's chief engineer, Lt. Cmdr. Montgomery “Scotty” Scott, in the rebooted Star Trek movies, gave their first impressions of the trailer. Let’s just say they weren’t feeling the love.

After watching the trailer during a Tech Insider interview, Takei said, “It doesn't have that element that made Star Trek, Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek, what it was. I didn't – in the preview – note anything of the substance of what made Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek so engaging, and it was the commentary on social justice, political reality at the time.” Oh my.

Even though he wasn’t enamored of the trailer, he still had some nice things to say about it: “It looked like a terrific action-adventure movie. A lot of clinging on cliffs and getting smashed against rocks, so it should be a very successful Star Trek movie.” Okay. That's not so bad, right? Check it out:

As for Simon Pegg, the actor told Hey U Guys: “It was very action-packed. I find it to be the marketing people to be ‘everybody come and see this film, it's full of action and fun,’ when there's a lot more to it than that. I didn't love it, because I know there's a lot more to the film. There's a lot more what I would call ‘Star Trek stuff.’”

What do you think? Star Trek Beyond opens in theaters on July 22, 2016.
