They're coming back in first trailer for Independence Day: Resurgence

Most of 2016 will be dominated by new-ish genre franchises hitting the big screen, but don’t forget about a staple from the 1990’s that’ll be coming back to life — just in time for the Fourth of July.

In a surprise move, 20th Century Fox dropped the debut trailer for Independence Day: Resurgence this weekend, giving us our first look at the long-awaited followup to the 1996 sci-fi staple that’s been playing on cable for the past two decades. There are definitely some familiar faces here, with both Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman back for Round 2, though the absence of Will Smith is definitely felt. Yes, new additions Liam Hemsworth and Jessie Usher look up to the task of fighting off some aliens, but Smith’s cigar-chomping hero will be hard to replace.

As for the movie itself, it looks surprisingly great, with the same not-too-serious feel of the first film. The story picks up in real time, 20 years after the alien attack chronicled in the first film. Humanity has rebuilt, and used some of that leftover alien tech to upgrade its own arsenal. But when the aliens come back in force (with a much bigger ship, as Goldblum notes), humanity will still have its hands full. It also looks like Pullman will be pulling out another trademark inspirational speech, and Goldblum gets to go to the moon (apparently)!
