Teaser surfaces for The Ring/The Grudge crossover movie

It looks like two of J-horror's signature franchises are getting into the shared-universe game.

According to Variety, a teaser has popped up online for a Japanese movie called Sadako Vs. Kayako, which will find Sadako, the unsettling long-haired ghost girl from The Ring, facing off against Kayako, the other unsettling long-haired ghost girl from The Grudge. Plot details are not available, but the movie is due for release in Japan in 2016.

The Ring (aka Ringu) and The Grudge (aka Ju-on) were two of the most popular titles to break out during the initial Japanese horror wave of the late '90s and early '00s. Both spawned sequels and prequels and reboots in their native country, along with English-language remakes here in the U.S.; those remakes in turn inspired their own sequels (the latest, Rings, is due for release on April 1). They led the way for a long string of Japanese horror outings and English-language counterparts, including Pulse, Dark Water and One Missed Call, among others.

These two vengeful spirits, however, have never crossed paths, but with Batman and Superman brawling next March, Captain America and Iron Man going toe to toe in May and even Godzilla and King Kong headed for a rematch, why the hell not?

Ironically, the whole idea apparently started as an April Fools’ Day joke that went viral, which made the producers realize that they were potentially leaving money on the table if they didn't make the actual film. There's no word on whether it will get released or even remade here, but it wouldn't be surprising at all if it did.

Hey, I even have a title for the American version: Grudge Match: Get in the Ring.

I'll see myself out.
