The next Men in Black movie will include a Woman in Black

The Men in Black franchise will add a female member to the team in their next screen adventure.

That's the word from producer Laurie Macdonald, who spoke quite clearly about bringing some gender diversity to the ranks in an interview with the BBC: "There will be a prominent woman in black in the fourth [film]."

Not only is this overdue, but it was also supposed to happen years ago: At the end of the very first MiB movie, released in 1997, it was hinted that Laurel Weaver (Linda Fiorentino) was going to be working with Agent J (Will Smith) in lieu of Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones). By the time the second movie rolled around, however, Weaver was nowhere to be found and K was back on the scene.

Whoever the new WiB ends up being, however, it's not clear whether Agents K and J will still be part of the story. Although Macdonald's producing partner/husband Walter Parkes said, "Never count Will out," the pair also hinted that MiB 4 will be a "reinvention" that will move away from the Smith/Jones relationship. Translation: They don't know if Smith will be back, and Jones is unlikely to return at all, so we're going to go with something else.

The other question, of course, is whether all this will take place in an actual Men in Black 4 or that already-announced crossover between this franchise and 21 Jump Street, both of which are owned by Sony Pictures. That all remains to be determined, but in the meantime, it seems all but certain that the term "Men in Black" itself will soon be outdated.
