Image of the Day: Step into The Force Awakens' massive stormtrooper dressing room

J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars sequel will obviously include a whole lot of stormtroopers, but where do all those soldiers keep their helmets and breastplates? Right here.

Wired went behind the scenes of The Force Awakens and got a peek into the epic staging area where they put all those costumes together. It’s a geeky awesome visual, just seeing 100+ stormtrooper costumes stacked up neatly in rows of lockers. As you likely noticed, these stormtrooper suits look a bit more legit when compared to the ones from the old films.

Turns out there’s a pretty good reason for that:

“The original stormtroopers were vacuum-formed. That process required a much thinner plastic to be heated and molded. These are much harder [cast in polyurethane], so they don't crack. They're much tougher materials, plus they have more flexibility … With time, I think, simplification occurs. Because the stormtroopers are hard and white and plasticky, my thoughts did go to Apple.”

Check out the money shot of the stormtrooper dressing room above, which looks like a random space you’d probably find on the official tour of the Death Star. Hey, those evil soldiers are people, too!

Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens Dec. 18.
