Tom Hanks turns down role on Doctor Who

We've heard of actors pulling double duty as directors and such, but casting? Peter Capaldi recently did just that: He was asked to to recruit Tom Hanks.

According to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Capaldi, told the U.K. TV show Good Morning Britain, “I was working with Tom Hanks last night, and the producer was onto me asking me to get him involved.”

Alas, it didn’t work out. “I did have a word with him,” Capaldi said, but [Hanks]’s very busy at the moment.” And thus ends Capaldi’s second career as a casting director.

Although Doctor Who tends to cast relatively unknown actors, occasionally the show manages to land a star who generates their own media buzz: John Cleese, Eric Roberts, Simon Pegg, Timothy Dalton, Anthony Head, Richard E. Grant, Ben Browder, John Hurt, Sir Ian McKellan, Bill Nighy, Dame Diana Rigg and, most recently, Maisie Williams.

But who does Peter Capaldi really want to work with? “I think it would be good to have some rock stars … like David Bowie.”

David Bowie, aka the Man who Fell to Earth? The man with long-reaching impact on sci-fi? Somebody, please, make this happen.
