River Song spends Christmas kissing everyone but Peter Capaldi in Doctor Who's Xmas special

As most of you may already know, Doctor Who’s upcoming Christmas special will feature the return of the Doctor’s wife, Professor River Song, archaeologist, played by Alex Kingston.

Up until now, not much was known about this year's yuletide episode, but Twelfth Doctor Peter Capaldi and Who showrunner Steven Moffat had some interesting things to say about the upcoming special, and the new dynamic between this current version of our beloved Time Lord and his flirty Missus.

Apparently, the Xmas festivities won’t be that festive to start with (as opposed to the previous ones) as the Doctor ends up chasing his wife across the universe to win her over on the BBC series. See, River doesn’t recognize this new incarnation of her hubby, and she keeps romancing (aka kissing) other guys. Showrunner Steven Moffat says there’d be “lots of kissing” and flirting, adding:

“It is not the most Christmassy Doctor Who ever… but it is a funny, fast madcap chase episode - with the doctor being chased and also chasing River.”

Russell [T Davies] said ‘you’ve got to bring her back - she has got to be together with Capaldi - it will be a sex storm.’ So I have - though the episode is called ‘Sex Storm’ - i couldn’t get that past the controller - but it is a wonderful episode. There is wonderful chemistry between Peter and Alex. It had to be done.”

The main man himself (Capaldi) also talked about his Doctor’s time-traveling romance with River, whom we last saw sharing a tender goodbye kiss with Matt Smith's Eleventh Doctor in “The Name of the Doctor” back in 2013, saying:

“Yes, there is [a chance for romance]. I’m trying not to give it away. My Doctor is different from the Doctors who were there when Alex first arrived. This Doctor’s different from that. It’s a different dynamic.”

“It is a lighthearted fun thing River doesn’t recognise the Doctor and he gets upset because she is flirting and doing all sort of stuff with people. She simply cannot be persuaded that he is the former Matt Smith/David Tennant/Christopher Eccleston - so there is lots of kissing, but not between River and the doctor! It was great working with Alex. She is an old hand on the show - it was brilliant fun.”

But all's not completely lost if you love all the Christmassy stuff, because Steven Moffat promises there WILL be some decorations. At least at first:

“The Tardis is covered in Icicles at the beginning but it moves on quite fast from that … basically you become aware of how many times you have done Christmas specials. Eventually you run out of things to do - or you end up with 'deadly snake tinsel'”
