Star Wars Rebels at New York Comic Con: Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ashley Eckstein infuse the universe with girl power

Star Wars Rebels has enough girl power to fuel a Death Star, with characters like Hera Syndulla, Sabine Wren, and Ahsoka Tano, and now the newest villain, the Seventh Sister, voiced by Sarah Michelle Gellar. At the Star Wars Rebels panel at New York Comic Con on Thursday, producer Dave Filoni said he is glad to introduce more female characters to the Star Wars universe.

Filoni seemed to enjoy Gellar’s character, an Inquisitor who plays her every advantage, “which has elements of the Sith.” In a clip for the upcoming season that Filoni screened for the audience, the Seventh Sister is holding padawan Ezra Bridger captive. Gellar’s voice tells him, almost casually, “I have no plans to kill you. Yet.”

Gellar said her character is “a thinking man’s villain. She’ll toy with you and then kill you.” She added, “I want to clarify I do all my own stunts this season” (Gellar, who is married to Freddie Prinze Jr., the voice of Jedi Kanan Jarrus, also noted, "I just wanted to know who I had to sleep with in order to get on this show").

Interestingly, the Seventh Sister has a link to the original Star Wars trilogy that no other character in Rebels has: Her costume was based on drawings from Ralph McQuarrie, Star Wars’ conceptual designer.

But Gellar’s isn’t the only female character with a chance to shine. Ashley Eckstein, who voices Ahsoka, is a mentor - as opposed to her role in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, in which she was the snippy young padawan. Now, “She’s more like Obi-Wan, almost Yoda at was a tough adjustment at first. She’s now in her early 30s. She’s a different character.”

Ahsoka offers guidance to Ezra. But Ezra has many mentors this season, including Rex, a Clone Wars soldier who, ahem, fought on the losing side. Filoni says that Kanan, who survived the Order 66 blood bath, distrusts any clone. “All Ezra sees is a kind old man who wants to make things right.”

According to Taylor Gray, who voices Ezra, Kanan will always be his master, his “number one dude. He’s made himself more well rounded by having these other mentors. It makes him stronger.”

But will he be strong enough to survive the Seventh Sister’s cunning? We’ll see for ourselves in the upcoming season of Star Wars Rebels, beginning on October 14.
