Watch the awesome pitch reel that got horror comedy The Final Girls greenlit

Indie horror comedy The Final Girls might be the perfect offbeat film to check out this Halloween season. But it almost didn’t happen.

The film, which is a wild mishmash of everything from Back to the Future to Friday the 13th, follows a young woman and her friends, who are transported into a 1980s slasher flick. But it’s so much more than that. Basically, it is about a young woman (Taissa Farmiga) grieving the loss of her mother (Malin Akerman), a famous scream queen from the 1980s. The daughter finds herself pulled into the world of her mom's most famous movie. Now reunited, they must work together and fight off the film's maniacal killer.

Lot of themes there, right? Family, death, loss, meta humor, time travel (kinda) — all wrapped up into a slasher flick. Director Todd Strauss-Shulson told Film School Rejects he was having a hard time pitching the concept to potential studios and financiers, so he cut together an insanely cool sizzle reel featuring a ton of footage from different films. The highlight? As Strauss-Shulson explained: “Bone Thugs under Heathers and My So Called Life is a personal point of pride.”

Yeah, it’s that cool.

So, as you track down a theater (or just hop on a VOD service) to check this one out, marvel at the wicked weird pitch reel that made it all happen.
