Goyer on the status of Syfy’s Superman prequel series Krypton

It’s been almost a year since we heard David S. Goyer (Man of Steel) was developing a Superman prequel television series at Syfy. Now we finally have an update on Krypton.

Though the network has yet to announce whether the project will receive a pilot order, Goyer told Collider it is still actively in development and he’s “hopeful” they’ll have some good news soon. Considering all the projects already on Syfy’s (Corporate owner of Blastr -Ed.) plate at the moment (The Expanse, Childhood's End, etc.), it’s not much of a surprise that something had to slide to the back burner. Here’s hoping we’re close to hearing more.

Goyer then went on to chat a bit about what DC fans might expect from the series if it goes forward. Basically, it sounds like the series could be an extension of some of the ideas we saw explored in the Krypton-set opening of Man of Steel, along with a deeper dive into the culture and politics of Kal-El’s home world.

Check out an excerpt from his comments below:

“Part of the fun of doing Man of Steel — and I was so insistent on setting that opening on Krypton and really seeing it, was pulling back the curtain. The first draft, the first forty pages were on Krypton, so we compressed that all down to fifteen minutes and there were a lot of ideas that I wanted to use in the film that didn’t ultimately make it into the film.

In terms of production value, you have to pick your moments. It will definitely, should we make the show there will definitely be some big moments. It won’t be wall to wall visual effects every single moment, spectacle, in the way that the film will be, but we’ll also be digging into the characters and the culture a lot more.”

If nothing else, it’s encouraging to hear this one is still in the works. Considering Goyer’s involvement, you’d have to think it still has a solid shot of making it on the air at some point. Albeit a bit later than some fans might have preferred, but still.

What would you like to see from a Krypton series?
