George Romero has found a long lost, zombie-filled scene from Night of the Living Dead

George Romero, himself, has unearthed 10 minutes of long-lost footage from his 1968 zombie horror classic Night of the Living Dead. Even better? It’s said to be the most zombie-filled scenes of the original cut.

Way back in the late 1980s, the film’s theatrical distributor chopped almost 10 minutes of footage that has remained lost to this day. But Romero has apparently dug it up on the original 16mm work print. The scenes reportedly take place at the jump cut in the basement and, according to the report, feature the most zombie-filled scenes of the entire film.

The find was apparently announced by Romero at the annual Monster Mania in Maryland, as reported by Bloody Disgusting. So when will we get to see this spiffy new footage? The report also notes Martin Scorsese is working up a remastered version of the film for an eventual Blu-ray release. There hasn’t been a time table announced just yet, but it’s nice to know it’s apparently on the way.

It’s taken almost 50 years, but we’re finally getting the full cut of Night of the Living Dead. Hopefully it’s worth the wait.
