Exclusive: The cast and creative team of Syfy's The Magicians talk about bringing Lev Grossman's fantasy series to life

Producer Sera Gamble has a pretty big hit on her resume with her run on Supernatural, but now she and co-producer John McNamara have a challenge ahead of them in adapting Lev Grossman's The Magicians to TV for Syfy (Blastr's corporate parent - Ed.). The books are sharp and self-aware, referencing tropes from The Chronicles of Narnia and Harry Potter pretty explicitly and crossing them over with a dry, urban wit. It's a delicate balance of cynicism and imagination, and as we all know, making that kind of thing work on the page is a lot different from breaking it up into a series of one-hour chunks for visual consumption.

So, how are Gamble, McNamara, and their assorted cast going about it? I had the chance to talk to both showrunners, along with cast members Arjun Gupta, Olivia Taylor Dudley, Jason Ralph (who plays main series protagonist Quentin Coldwater) and Summer Bishil at New York Comic Con as they presented the show to an audience you could tell really wanted a reason to believe that the potent mixture Grossman cooked up could be translated to television. Everyone involved made mention of being fans of the books, of Lev Grossman's participation of the process and of the attention to detail that has gone into creating the world of The Magicians (including a finger tutting-influenced system of intricate hand movements fans of the book will remember as being critical to the use of magic in this world).
