Japanese artist creates amazing digital "face hacking" illusions

Here's a crazy video demonstrating the surreal art of "Face Hacking," an amazing mega-morphing technology designed by Tokyo-based producer and artist Nobumichi Asai.  These live actors' faces are elegantly manipulated inside a sophisticated stage using real-time face tracking, digital projectors and 3D animation, creating an ever-changing illusion overlaying their actual faces. This project's performance was shown to a group of Japanese talk show hosts, and their stunned reactions are a testament to the trippy technological advancements on display. 

The effect is nifty, and it really has to make one wonder about the future of VFX, makeup and performance capture. Movements can currently only be tracked fairly slowly, but when the technology catches up ...
