Super Baseball 2020
This 1993 console title features baseball using technology anticipated in the year 2020. First of all, this game really overestimates how far we'd be five years from now. There are baseball playing robots, which is a ridiculously ambitious notion for 2020. We can't even get them to play a decent game of soccer, yet. Also, call us anti-integration, but we don't want robots playing professional sports.
The biggest issue we had when playing this game is that "futuristic" baseball is really just "normal" baseball with an enormous number of arbitrary rule changes thrown in. Weird foul ball zones, glass walls over the left and right field fences, zones where the ball will stop rolling, and something called "jump zones" all just serve to confuse us. In addition, it seems that the programmers focused too much on these weird changes, and not enough on instilling the fundamentals. None of our baseman fielders will move off the base, even when the ball rolls within a few feet of them. A ball hit just right will force us to have to use the pitcher to chase the ball into the outfield, as we can't switch players during a play.
We know what you're thinking: "But, are there land mines?" Yes, like every single violent sci-fi sports game ever created, there are random land mines. Enjoy blowing up for no other reason than you stepped on a randomly chosen part of the field. The future is a bleak place.
