Jason Momoa talks DC's Aquaman and reveals if he'll go blond for the role

While at the Sundance Film Festival, Jason Momoa answered some questions during the Smart Works panel. And of course, some of those questions had to do with that little Aquaman flick that’s on DC’s plate, in which Momoa will star as the mighty King of the Seven Seas.

Be aware of possible spoilers below! Sooooo, here we go.

When he was asked what fans of the comic book could expect to see on the big screen, here’s what Momoa said:

“Well, things are going to be a little different. When I first went in I met with Zack (Snyder). His idea is pretty amazing. When I went in, he told me ... my jaw kind of dropped. My jaw doesn't normally drop. What he has planned for the DC world and for ... definitely for Aquaman is something that, you know... I think I was brought on for a certain reason and they got some really cool plans for him. I'm really excited for everyone to see it.”

The Game of Thrones actor (he played Khal Drogo during the show’s first season) also talked about how hard it was for him to keep his casting secret. Momoa landed the role over a year ago, and the original plan was for him to keep it mum until 2016 (that’s when Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will be released). As we all know, that didn’t exactly work out as planned ...

“Last year, when I was on this panel I was like eating chicken breasts and in training when I wasn't supposed to talk about anything. I wasn't supposed to say anything until 2016. So I told a bunch of people that they could punch me in the face if I was on it, so I'm going to get hit a couple times. But they finally released it. I was supposed to keep it a secret for 3 years.”

When the panel’s host told him that Michael Shannon (General "Kneel Before" Zod in Man of Steel) was spotted at Sundance wearing an Aquaman t-shirt — to which Momoa exclaimed “That’s awesome!” — the host followed up by asking what the relationship was there because there’s this little rumor going around that Shannon will have some sort of role to play in Batman v Superman, even though Zod is supposed to be dead as a Kryptonian doornail. Her question was followed by a long silence from Momoa, who then completely avoided the question by saying how important the role of Aquaman was to him, vis-a-vis his Polynesian roots and its Hawaiian gods.

But the most important question was when a 74-year-old woman asked if his take on Arthur Curry will sport a beard and mustache:

“Well, just going off what you've seen so far ma'am, I don't think he is going to be blonde or white. I can't really tell you because I haven't shot it yet. I hate to disappoint. But um, you know, I'm a little different than what those others. I hope you watch it with an open heart.”

Of course, Jason Momoa’s not a white dude, as he pointed out himself, and we have a hard time imagining him with a mop of blond hair. So we’re actually glad they won’t go for a lame dye job or a blond wig. We have no problem whatsoever with him sporting his natural hair color and the beard, if they're so inclined.

Aquaman will be released on July 27, 2018. No director is attached to the movie yet.
