TV THIS WEEK: 12 Monkeys premieres, Helix returns, and more!

We're still waiting to get back to a full TV schedule after the holiday break, but midseason shows are starting to fill that void more and more. This week we get the premiere of the much-anticipated 12 Monkeys and the season-two premiere of Helix, all in one big night for Syfy. Plus, a new original Netflix series, Face Off, is back for its eighth season, Constantine and Grimm return from break, and more.

Check out the week in TV below. What's on your watchlist?

Highlights of the Week

Face Off (Syfy) Tuesday, 9 p.m. - "Return of the Champions"

Season premiere! - For the last four years, while large portions of Syfy's programming have been in flux with varying degrees of success, Face Off has remained a reliable hit with its combination of behind-the-curtain FX tricks and competition between artists. It's enjoyed both by genre fans and by people who basically only watch Syfy (or even sci-fi) when it's on, and its two-seasons-per-year production rate means it provides a steady stream of viewers for Syfy and a steady stream of entertainment for its fans. So far, anyway. This week, Face Off is back for its eighth season, former champions are back to judge the new contestants, and we'll see if the show keeps bringing back viewers.

The Adventures of Puss In Boots (Netflix) Friday

Series premiere! - The Shrek franchise just refuses to go away. After four main films, one spinoff film, holiday specials and short films, a fifth Shrek flick is still planned, a second Puss in Boots feature is developing, and now Netflix has delivered a brand-new Puss in Boots animated series that hits all at once on Friday. You could be one of those adults who's still in love with this world, you could have kids around who need something to watch, or you could just be bored. Whatever the case, the fairy-tale world of Shrek is back on Netflix. Check out a preview below.

Constantine (NBC) Friday, 8 p.m. - "The Saint of Last Resorts, Part 2"

Midseason premiere! - Constantine enters 2015 in a very precarious position, not just in terms of its story but in terms of whether it'll still be around come fall. We've already talked about NBC's decision not to extend the show's run with a back nine order of episodes, and how we've been assured that such a decision, while not exactly a vote of confidence, doesn't necessarily doom the show. Ratings are low, to be sure, but they're not absolutely rock bottom, and NBC is a network that's taken chances and been patient with shows like Hannibal in recent years. That said, and I believe I've made this point before, Constantine certainly has plenty of advocates, but it's nowhere near the critical darling that Hannibal has been. So where does that leave us? With a show that has five episodes to prove there's enough in the tank to keep it around for season two. We'll see if it gets there. This week, Chas, Zed and Anne Marie race against time to save John. Check out a preview below.

12 Monkeys (Syfy) Friday, 9 p.m. - "Pilot"

Series premiere! - We've talked a lot in recent months about Syfy's purported commitment to returning to harder genre programming, and now we finally get to see one of the most anticipated products of that commitment in 12 Monkeys. We've been skeptical about the show for a long time, but the promise of a complete reimagining of Terry Gilliam's classic film, rather than a remake, has us hopeful and eager to see this particular sci-fi concept play out in a more long-form way. Of course, the long-form possibilities could make for a lot of stretching and emptiness, but we'll have to watch and find out, won't we? Check out the first nine minutes of the pilot below.

Helix (Syfy) Friday, 10 p.m. - "San Jose"

Season premiere! - Helix is not an anthology series, or a set of miniseries, exactly, but we are getting at least a little bit of that feel in the transition from the arctic claustrophobia of season one to the green island terror of season two. Helix's central conceit makes it perfect for a kind of seasonal reset, and so even if you didn't like the almost clinical environment of the first season, you might come back and see the same characters explore the much more open world of season two and find it suits you. This week, the survivors of season one's horrors try to move on, but find themselves facing yet another pandemic threat on a mysterious island. Check out a preview below.
