Online petition launched for life-sized Wolverine statue in Edmonton

Canada's most famous mutant could have his very own statue if some of his countrymen get their way.

According to NerdBastards, a man named Jesse Seitz has launched an online petition asking that the city of Edmonton in the province of Alberta -- near where Wolverine was reportedly born -- erect a life-sized statue of James "Logan" Howlett in honor of him being one of the most popular characters in comic book history.

As Seitz, himself, said, "Not many popular or exciting fictional characters are born Canadian, but superhero and adventurer Wolverine isn’t just Canadian, he’s an Albertan too, I think it would make a lot of people really proud to live in Edmonton and raise morale to erect a life size statue of this character in City Hall, or even perhaps Churchill Square or the Alberta Legislature Grounds.”

The petition, which has garnered as I write this nearly 3,500 of the 100,000 signatures Seitz is hoping to collect, reads as follows:

City Council/Mayor Don Iveson

Please consider the opinions of the citizens who have signed this petition towards the creation of a life sized Wolverine statue to be placed somewhere in this great city of Edmonton to be viewed by all who live here and visit, as Wolverine is a Canadian and Albertan symbol of strength, perseverance in the face of tragedy, and overall heroics.

As NerdBastards (great name, by the way) points out, there is a statue of Superman in downtown Metropolis, Illinois, and Detroit is supposed to get a bronze likeness of RoboCop at some point in the near future. And with so few characters of his stature emerging from Canada (sorry, friends to the north), why shouldn't Wolverine be memorialized in the same way, especially with his imminent death staring us in the face?

Check out the petition if you want to show your support. Do you think Edmonton should put up a Wolverine statue? Would it help tourism there? And what other cities should erect statues of their iconic comic book characters?
