Gale Anne Hurd's alien drama Hunters gets series order at Syfy

Syfy just picked up another hard genre drama to add to its lineup.

After a year of development, the network's given a 13-episode, straight-to-series order to Hunters, the latest TV effort from executive producer Gale Anne Hurd (The Walking Dead, The Terminator). Natalie Chaidez (VTerminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles) will script the show and serve as executive producer with Hurd, and the series is expected to arrive on Syfy in 2016.

Based on the best-selling thriller Alien Hunter by genre novelist Whitley Strieber (who famously detailed his own experiences with abduction by mysterious beings in the, um, nonfiction book Communion), Hunters follows detective Flynn Carroll, who begins an obsessive search for his wife after she suddenly goes missing. Carroll eventually uncovers both evidence of alien beings living in secret on this planet, kidnapping humans at will, and a secret police force that's hunting them. The novel's already spawned a sequel -- Alien Hunter: Underworld -- so the show is starting out with no shortage of source material to mine for episodes.

We've talked a lot over the last year about Syfy's push to get back to more serious genre storytelling with projects like 12 MonkeysAscension and The Expanse, and Hunters looks set to extend that effort. There's no word on casting yet, but with the right stars this show could be a lot of fun.
