The second season of ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is adding a genre heavyweight when it returns Tuesday night, but can Coulson and his team actually trust Lucy Lawless's mysterious Agent Isabelle Hartley?
They're shaking up the cast quite a bit with the new season, adding Lawless and almost half a dozen other new recurring players to staff Coulson’s (Clark Gregg) new-look version of S.H.I.E.L.D. But the legendary Lawless (Battlestar Galactica, Xena) is arguably the most buzzworthy addition.
Lawless spoke with Entertainment Weekly about her character, who falls somewhere between mercenary and deep-cover agent, and it sounds like she should be an interesting fit with the team we already know and (mostly) love. Hartley brings her own team, comprised of Lance Hunter (Nick Blood) and Idaho (Wilmer Calderon), with her — and they’re all extremely dedicated to Coulson.
Here are some choice excerpts from Lawless' comments:
“She’s tough as all get out. She does what she wants, when she wants for her own purposes. It just so happens that whatever Coulson’s purpose is becomes her No. 1 aim in life, so he knows he can trust her above all … They’re a ragtag bunch. The S.H.I.E.L.D. team is very slick and they’re not keen for any of that stuff, but they get the job done. S.H.I.E.L.D. might not like us, but they know they need us and they can trust us.”
If you didn’t like Lawless enough already, she also geeked out about getting to co-star in an episode featuring Marvel comic baddie Carl “Crusher” Creel/The Absorbing Man (Brian Patrick Wade), since she’s a big comic fan herself. We’re going to go ahead and say it — make the woman a series regular. Pronto:
“They just have to be smarter than the foe, but the foe is awesome when you’ve got the Absorbing Man to deal with. I remember as a kid just thinking that was such an unbelievable concept and what an unbeatable foe a character like that would be.”
