New Star Wars: Rebels clip shows off character inspired by original Chewbacca sketches

Ahead of that October premiere, Disney has rolled out yet another clip from Star Wars: Rebels — giving us our first introduction to Zeb, a character that actually started out as an unused Chewbacca design.

The character, voiced by Steve Blum, is essentially the “muscle” for the rebel Ghost crew. Awesome note: The character’s design was reportedly based on some of legendary designer Ralph McQuarrie’s early Star Wars sketches for Chewbacca. Yes, they’re essentially picking all of McQuarrie’s sketchbooks clean, but we’re psyched they’re going back to where it all began for inspiration.

As for the new clip, it features Zeb fighting off a team of stormtroopers while dropping some snarky one-liners. To be honest, this clip is actually a fair bit better than the other recent footage they’ve been showing off recently. Zeb might at least bring a little attitude to the potential corniness. Plus, there’s some solid effects work on display here.

Check out the footage below and let us know what you think:

As for Rebels, it’ll debut on Oct. 13 on Disney Channel, before relocating to Disney XD. The show is set between the two trilogies and will dig into an era of approximately two decades that have been left largely unexplored. We’ll also see the rise of the Empire, as they hunt down the remaining Jedi — including the Rebel cell on display here.
