We'll have to wait quite a while for Godzilla to return for a sequel

Godzilla 2 is on the way, but the wait might be longer than you'd like.

After years of wondering if we'd ever get a good American production of Godzilla, we were pleased with what director Gareth Edwards and company delivered earlier this year. Godzilla was a box-office hit that also received a quite a bit of critical acclaim, and it wasn't too long before Legendary Pictures announced they'd continue their adventures with everyone's favorite kaiju. Just getting a sequel to the flick was exciting enough at first, but fans were overjoyed when it was announced last month at San Diego Comic-Con that Edwards will return for another installment, and that round two could feature the King of the Monsters' legendary foes (and sometime allies) Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah (who is a three-headed dragon from space and therefore the best Godzilla nemesis. Just sayin').

So, we're definitely getting more Godzilla, he's coming back with the director who made the first film a success, and he's bringing some friends. That all sounds great! When can we see it?

Well, that's where we get a bit of bad news.

Legendary and Warner Bros. announced today that Godzilla 2 is set to be released on June 8, 2018, more than four years after the first film. OK, so it's not exactly a huge wait on a cosmic scale, or if you're an Avatar fan, but in this age of tentpoles most sequels arrive a bit faster than that, so it's at least a little surprising. As for why we're waiting that long, well, Edwards is a little busy directing a Star Wars spinoff film set to be released in December 2016. When he's done, he'll pull back from a galaxy far, far away and embrace monster destruction once again.

So we've got a four-year wait for Godzilla ahead of us. On the bright side, though, we've got not one but two major genre flicks from Edwards on the way.
