DC and Warner Bros. just put that Aquaman spinoff film on the fast track

There have been rumblings about a potential Aquaman spinoff film for a while, and now it sounds like DC just put the project on the fast track.

The Hollywood Reporter claims Warner Bros. has hired two separate writers to work up two separate scripts for a potential Aquaman film. They’ve reportedly tapped Will Beall (Gangster Squad) and Kurt Johnston (300: Rise of an Empire) to work up the competing pitches. This also makes it seem pretty likely he might get an intro in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, along with everyone else, apparently.

The dual-writer approach is a clear sign that Warner Bros. is keen to get an Aquaman movie into development quickly, as this will allow them to pursue two different options, then pick the strongest script to push into active development. Considering the studio has a whopping 9+ DC release dates to fill, it's no surprise Aquaman is near the top of the list. Despite the jokes, he’s a big name, and it makes sense Warner Bros. would want to capitalize if they can do it right.

So, where might Aquaman fit in DC’s big list of future release dates? They have dates slotted all the way through 2020, but with Aquaman moving so quickly at this point in mid-2014, we’d think this project could slide into one of those 2016-2017 dates quite nicely.

But who will star in it? The smart money remains on Stargate Atlantis and Game of Thrones star Jason Momoa, though neither Momoa nor the studio has made that official yet. But director Zack Snyder did recently call into a talk radio show to argue why Aquaman is a compelling character, so it makes sense the studio is pushing to make it happen.

What do you think? Could Aquaman be a key player in DC’s future strategy?
